...Systemic Family Practitioner and founder of Amani Family Services. I believe in the power of healthy family relationships and their ability to positively impact every area of our lives.
I am passionate about helping you have a better relationship with yourself and those around you.
I have worked with couples and families in various settings for some years now, having fallen in love with couple therapy theory whilst working as a researcher.
I became very interested in the myriad of ways that relationships have an impact on us; you might know from your own experience that difficulties in your relationship can have an impact on your emotions, health, finances, ambition, confidence, self-worth, motivation and so on, not to mention the impact it may have on your children.
Although I work with various issues, I can especially work with you if you are experiencing conflict or issues in your relationship with your partner, ex-partner, or other family members, you’ve been diagnosed with a serious illness or disability, you’ve experienced a bereavement, or you’re a single person wanting to understand your patterns in relationships. (You can read more about these specialisms in the ‘I need help for…’ section).
I chose to specialise in systemic practice because of its bold commitment to social justice. I am committed to practicing in an anti-racist, anti discriminatory way. I am interested in looking at systems that perpetuate racism, ableism, homophobia, sexism and classism. Perhaps some of these may be the very reason why you have been referred for help.
Systemic practice widens the scope beyond you as an individual and places your issue in a wider context. Mostly, this context is of course the family system, but what I love about this area of practice is that we also look at how systems like culture, school, religion, local area, economy and so on are having an impact on you.
We also look at family blueprints (good and bad), how these have been passed on to you, and how you may be passing them on to the generations below you.
You might be feeling apprehensive about seeking help, especially if it is your first time. Perhaps you may have an idea that sessions are going to be formal and serious, and your entire life will be laid bare.
My aim is to provide a space for us to examine the story so far, and use this new knowledge to make links with the present. I will encourage you to bring your full self at your own pace; no cold, formal or stuffy atmosphere here.
I believe that you are the expert on you, and I will seek to learn about who you are so that we can co-create the right atmosphere for you to work on what needs to be worked on.
I will get to know you in-depth, and this means that we will celebrate the big and small wins, and sit in the pain of the hard times together. More importantly you will learn a lot about yourself and why you are who you are.
I love seeing the potential of who you could be and we will go hard together to ensure we bring that out of you.
My favourite moments in therapy? Definitely the ones where a marginal gain is made: perhaps where you make that first step from 10/10 anxiety to 9/10 anxiety, or where you have a lightbulb moment about why this particular thing is causing your partner so much hurt.
